RuTC celebrates new building with Topping Out Ceremony

On Friday 24 May, staff and students from Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) celebrated the Topping Out Ceremony of its new building, Richmond Building, with their construction partner ISG.

The ceremony was opened by Robin Ghurbhurun, RuTC’s Chief Executive and Principal, and student Bethannie York, who recently won The Diana Award, carried out the tightening of the last bolt.

Six hundred pledge not to idle their engines

Six hundred individuals, businesses, schools and community groups have signed the pledge to help make Richmond upon Thames an idle-free borough by switching off their vehicle engines when stopped. The six hundred pledge comes in the run up to Clean Air Day on Thursday 20 June 2019.

Guerrilla gardeners restore colour to riverside

Members of the Richmond Society tended to the plot between Buccleuch Gardens and the former Three Pigeons pub beside the Thames at Richmond, clearing the area and planting bulbs to restore colour to the area.

Thanks are due to the Metropolitan & Public Gardens Association and Taylors of Holbeach who donated 250 bulbs, Ham House for more than 300 bulbs, Petersham Nurseries for more than 150 plants and members of GoodGym Richmond who dug, weeded, composted, and helped to plant bulbs.

The Vineyard School Summer Fair

Come along to the Vineyard School Summer Fair on Saturday 22 June from 12 noon to 4pm. 

Visitors will enjoy go-karts, mega slide, bouncy castle, kids yoga & games and more! There will also be live entertainment, a silent auction, and a bbq.

RuTC Catering students continue to win gold

During May half term, Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) Catering students competed at the 2019 Wessex Salon Culinaire competition and walked away with four gold, three silver and one bronze medals.

The annual competition, hosted by the Craft Guild of Chefs, is one of the UK’s most highly respected competitions for young chefs and attracts over 500 competitors.

GoodGym help Marble Hill Play Centre

It's Volunteer Week every week at GoodGym Richmond.

On Monday the team visited Marble Hill Playcentre where they sanded down chairs and doors and picked up litter.

The next run will be on Monday 10 June from 6.45pm meeting at Wholefoods Richmond. Runners will help with a tidy and clear at a local youth centre.

The Petersham Consort: Lute songs and madrigals from England and Italy

The Petersham Consort are looking forward to their next concert at St Peter's Church in Petersham on Sunday 23 June, where they will delve into John Dowland's fabulous songs, with Rowena Sudbury on lute, interspersed with our favourite English and Italian madrigals.

New clubs at Whitton Library

Two brand new clubs for children and their families will launch at Whitton Library in time for the summer holidays.

A free family chess club will be starting on Saturday 29 June, and will take place from 10.30am to 12 noon each week.

And for those who would rather build than capture castles why not join the brand-new and free Lego Club, from 3.30 to 4.30pm every third Monday of the month starting on Monday 15 July.

Nominations for 2019’s Community Heroes’ Awards open today. It is a chance for us to highlight and celebrate the commitment of the people and groups living and working in Richmond upon Thames, who improve the lives of our communities and represent the borough with pride and excellence.

Submit your nomination for your Community Heroe, in any category, before 10pm on Wednesday 10 July. You can also find hard copies of the nomination form in Civic Centre or your local library.

LGBT Film makers

In honour of Pride Month, Barnes Film Festival will celebrate the impact of LGBT filmmaking within the industry with the intimate event  In Conversation: LGBT Filmmakers and The Industry on Wednesday 19 June at 8.30pm.

The event will be hosted by BBC's Evan Davies and will feature some of the UK film industries' most exciting new talent. The panel will share their work through showreels and highlights reels, as well as engage with the audience for a Q&A session.

Back to Netball: Vineyard School

Back to Netball sessions are up and running at The Vineyard School, Richmond Hill every Monday from 5.30 to 6.30pm. Back to Netball is a programme of pay-and-play activity that provides ladies with a gentle re-introduction to the sport.

Sessions are led by a UKCC Level 2 Coach and cover basic skill development and court play in a safe environment that is set up to nurture social interaction.

There will be a Father's Day event with special guests on Sunday 16 June.

Church Street goes Green!

Church Street will transform into a green oasis for the annual garden event taking place on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June as part of Twickenham Festival.

There will be many stalls including crafts, plants and horticulture stalls, as well as street food and entertainment. The street is pedestrianised for the day and it is free entry.

Teddington in Flower churchyard teas

In conjunction with Teddington in Flower, St Mary with St Alban Church will be offering churchyard teas with homemade cakes and scones from 3 to 5.30pm on Sunday 9 June.

There will also be two handbell concerts at 2.30pm and 3.30pm, and a ceremony to celebrate the historic churchyard at 5pm. All money raised from the teas will go to the Mozambique Flood Relief Appeal.

SPEAR are currently sourcing cakes from local businesses, cafes or professional caterers for the Art Fair & Garden Party at Trumpeters House in Richmond on Sunday 23 June.

Team Richmond success

Young athletes from Team Richmond have been busy competing in the London Youth Games and are in great shape to make a push to the top of the leader board as they currently lie in second place overall.

Recent highlights include qualifying for the tennis finals and qualifying, for the first time ever, in both the boys and girls basketball finals.

At the ParaGames Swimming events held at Beckenham Spa, the team collected no less than 24 individual medals, where the girls retained overall gold in their event and the boys finished a very credible fourth position.

Residents and businesses in Richmond upon Thames are invited to attend a community event on Wednesday 19 June at St Michael and All Angels Church, 39 Elm Bank Gardens, Barnes SW13 0NX for an update on the ongoing works and future of Hammersmith Bridge.

Priority at the meeting is for Richmond upon Thames residents and businesses. To guarantee admission please register online.
