Young artist designs logo for new safeguarding partnership

A new logo created by a nine-year-old artist from Newland House School in Twickenham has been selected as the winning design for the new Kingston and Richmond Safeguarding Children Partnership.

Nine-year-old Gemma Bruce was selected as the winning designer, announced at a special reception in the Mayor’s Parlour at Kingston Council yesterday, Tuesday 4 June 2019, timed to coincide with Child Safety Week.

Architects shortlisted for Twickenham Riverside redevelopment

Five talented architects have been shortlisted to create potential designs for the future of Twickenham Riverside.

In March this year, we announced the launch of a Design Competition to find an architect-led team to work on proposals for the Twickenham Riverside site. The competition is managed by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The Space Grotto of the New Neptunists

Drop in to our pop-up tent in the grounds of Orleans House Gallery for an interactive installation designed for all.  

Participants are invited to become ‘New Neptunists’ and enter an imaginative space where they become future astro-geologists searching for rare and beautiful rocks in the seas of Neptune itself. Following this imaginative journey, they are invited try their hands at stone painting.

This activity is free and a drop-in, so no booking is necessary.

Steam heritage water works weekend

Kempton Steam Museum and Hampton and Kempton Waterworks Railway, are holding their Water Works weekend, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June 2019, to celebrate the local heritage story of the supplying clean drinking water to London in the early 1920s.

There will be a rare opportunity to see the world's largest 1,000 ton steam pumping engine in steam with many other activities taking place outside the Museum and at the railway.

Community groups receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Four local community groups, run largely by volunteers, have been honoured this National Volunteers Week (Saturday 1 to Friday 7 June) with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

Representatives from Ham and Petersham SOS, FORCE, Companion cycling and Friends of Barnes Common attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

A competition for young Europeans

Children and students, aged between 5 to 18 years old, are invited to design a poster to advertise the 60th anniversary of the twinning between Fontainebleau, Konstanz and Richmond, which will be celebrated in Richmond from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 June 2020.

The winning poster will be displayed throughout the borough, in France and Germany. The runners up will be exhibited in Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham.

New footbridge

Visitors to Little Park at the northern end of Crane Park will benefit from a new pedestrian bridge across the River following a project co-ordinated by Richmond and Hounslow Councils and FORCE.

The bridge creates a circular walk across the River Crane, linking Crane Park north to Hounslow Heath and Brazil Mill Woods. The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) are working with Richmond Council to improve the Little Park entrance and path.

In the Gallery: South London Printmaking Exhibition

To coincide with Richmond Art House Open Studios, The Landmark Arts Centre will be hosting a celebration of South London printmaking artists from four key printmaking groups - Richmond Printmakers, Kew Studio, Greenwich Printmakers and the Southbank Printmakers.

Visit the exhibition from 6 to 8pm on Thursday 20 June or from 10am to 4pm between Friday 21 and Sunday 23 June.

Help map out new ward boundaries for Richmond upon Thames

The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking local people for their help in drawing up a new pattern of council wards for Richmond upon Thames.

The deadline to submit your views is on Monday 5 August 2019. Further information on the review and interactive maps of the existing wards can be found at The Local Government Boundary Commission website.

Mayor marks Clarendon's first anniversary at new site

The Mayor, Cllr Nancy Baldwin, joined children and teachers at Clarendon School to mark the first anniversary of their move to the school's new site in Egerton Road.

A series of mosaics, funded by a Civic Pride grant from Rchmond Council, adorns the outside of the school.

Age UK Richmond’s engAGE Music Festival

Age UK Richmond are excited to host the engAGE Music Festival 2019, sponsored by Medacs.

Held at the Barnes Home Guard Association, it will be a fun afternoon for all including local bands, stalls, BBQ, online auction, photo booth and more! Plenty to keep the children entertained (and the adults of course!).

England beat Germany on penalties

Two teams of teachers from Teddington School took part in a 5 a side football tournament in our twin town of Konstanz last weekend. One of the English teams won the tournament after a penalty shoot out in the final.

Barnes charity bike sale

For the past 12 years, St Mary's Church in Barnes have been recycling adult and children's bikes and giving the proceeds to charity. Bikes are brought in, given some much-needed TLC and are then sold.

This year the Children's bike sale will take place on Friday 12 July from 3.30 to 5pm, and the main sale on Saturday 13 July from 9am to 12.30pm at St Mary's Church in Barnes (SW13 9HL).

Local youngsters contact outer space

CoderDojo is a global volunteer-led community of free programming workshops for young people and is part of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and runs on the fourth Saturday of the month at the Old Town Hall in Richmond from 1 to 3pm.

Children are encouraged to bring their own device if they can. Tickets get booked up very early and spaces are limited.

Residents’ needs on both sides of Hammersmith Bridge are the priority

The Leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council took Cllr Gareth Roberts, the Leader of Richmond Council, on a tour of Hammersmith Bridge last week to show him the refurbishment works being done to return the bridge to full working order and its former Victorian splendour. Also, they discussed how they will work together to ensure residents’ needs remain the priority.

Following on from Volunteers Week and the Volunteer Fair, Richmond CVS want to celebrate and thank local volunteers for their time and support.

A special event has been organised and will take place from 10.30am to 12 noon on Thursday 13 June.

The Richmonds Medal

Join The River Friends with special guest Sir David Attenborough to celebrate the award of the Richmonds Medal.

This special evening will take place on Friday 14 June at Sudbrook House, Richmond Golf Club.

All proceeds of the evening will support the ongoing conservation work of the Thames Landscape Strategy. Numbers are strictly limited so early booking is encouraged.
