Apply for a Council Tax exemption for a property left empty by someone receiving or providing care

A home is exempt from Council Tax when it is unoccupied due to the householders receiving or providing care.

About the exemption

To qualify for this exemption, the property must be unoccupied and the main home of the last tenant or owner. In addition:

People receiving care

  • the last tenant or owner must be living somewhere else to receive personal care, but not in a hospital or nursing home, and
  • the care is needed because of old age, disablement, illness, alcohol/drug dependence or mental problems, and
  • the last tenant or owner has been receiving this care for the whole time since moving out of the property

People providing care

  • the tenant or owner is living elsewhere to provide personal care for someone, and
  • the care is needed because of old age, disablement, illness, alcohol/drug dependence or mental problems, and
  • the tenant or owner has been providing care for the whole time since moving out of the property

The property will be exempt as long as the circumstances remain the same.
