Cooling tower notification
Under the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992, it is a legal requirement for premises with cooling towers to register them with their local authority.
Summary
Cooling towers are structures used to help cool the temperature of water in air conditioning and industrial processes.
The heat is extracted through evaporation, and the cooled water is then recirculated back into the system. They are often found in industrial facilities and large commercial buildings.
The warm, moist settings inside a cooling tower are the ideal conditions for Legionella bacteria to proliferate.
This notification allows the authority to monitor systems and identify where potential sources of legionella and other infectious diseases may have occurred. The notification allows us to ensure that safety measures are in place to protect the public.
Cooling towers register
When the notification is received the details will be added to the cooling towers register. A safety officer may visit your premises to check water quality or any safety issues.
Make a notification
There is no fee required for the notification.
Please ensure that you provide a plan detailing the locations of the cooling towers and/or evaporative condensers along with your completed notification form.
