Repairs

Repairs are done by volunteers from Twickenham Repair Café. You can bring small items for repair: electrical appliances, clothing, furniture, crockery, housewares, bicycles, toys. If it's broken and you can carry it, there's a good chance it will be repaired.

We can't repair large items - the site is a small-scale community venue.

Circular living

Our aim is to create a local model of circular living - reducing waste, strengthening community resilience, and celebrating the heritage of Grove Gardens Chapel by giving it a new purpose rooted in sustainability.

Circular living is reducing waste by limiting what we buy in the first place and using what we already have more efficiently by extending their life through, repair, reuse, sharing, and finally recycling them when they can no longer be reused or repurposed.

Reducing our waste and extending the lifespan of our belongings is better for the planet and better for our bank accounts. Through not buying as many new things and throwing less away, we’re reducing demand for items and protecting natural resources as well as reducing carbon emissions.

Through The Fixery we’re creating a circular space and community to bring people together to put circular living into action.

Partners and collaborators

This project is a partnership between Richmond Council and Habitats & Heritage.

London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Council

The Fixery is being run by LBRuT to support residents to reduce waste, repair more, and build local skills.

One of the goals of our Climate and Nature Strategy 2025-2030 and Action Plan is to collaborate and partner to promote a zero-waste and circular economy, to reduce waste related carbon emissions.

This is related to the policy objective to reduce waste and carbon emissions and become a net zero borough by 2043. Circular economy initiatives can support this as they can help cut global greenhouse gas emissions by 33%, playing an important role in supporting a sustainable planet.

Habitats & Heritage

Habitats & Heritage is a local charity dedicated to protecting and looking after local landscape, wildlife, ecosystems and heritage buildings. They bring expertise in sustainable living, heritage stewardship, ecosystem improvements, community engagement and local partnerships.

Community partners and local makers

We have a range of experts, volunteers and dedicated people in the borough who are involved in the project, these include repairers, upcyclers, educators, volunteers, and local organisations that have helped shape The Fixery’s activities.

Repurposing Grove Gardens Chapel

Habitats & Heritage have recently restored and repaired the Chapel with funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), under the communities and place scheme.

The funding supports accessible and inclusive public spaces, increased use of community facilities; and improved community infrastructure and resources.

Hosting The Fixery at Grove Gardens Chapel will ensure the Chapel is being used again and the restored and repurposed chapel strongly reflects the repair and reuse ethos of The Fixery.

History

The Chapel was constructed 1875 to 77 to the designs of ecclesiastical architect, Sir Arthur Blomfield. He is also noted for designing the Queen’s School at Eton College and The Bank of England’s Law Courts Branch on Fleet Street.

Built in the Gothic revival style, this chapel served as a Church of England mortuary chapel for Richmond Old Cemetery for nearly a century.

The chapel became disused in the 1964 and fell into disrepair over the successive decades. By the 1990s, nature had reclaimed the structure, covering it in ivy and allowing the elements to penetrate the interior through part of the missing roof.

The chapel was renovated since, but again in recent years the chapel began to fall into a state of uncertainty, this time as a result of severe subsidence linked to climate change. Habitats & Heritage have done extensive work to stabilise the structure, underpinning the walls, yet again securing the chapel into the future.
