Richmond Climate and Nature Strategy

Latest updates about our Climate and Nature Strategy, and our Climate Action Plan.

New Richmond Climate and Nature Strategy (2025 to 2030)

You can read the new Richmond Climate and Nature Strategy (2025 to 2030) and new Richmond Climate Action Plan (2025), published in July 2025.

The new strategy addresses the ecological challenges our borough faces, aiming to accelerate our pathway towards becoming a Net Zero borough by 2043.

It also focuses on enhancing our adaptation and resilience towards the effects of climate change.

Richmond Sustainability Forum

Anyone living or working in Richmond with an interest in sustainability is invited to join the Richmond Sustainability Forum. The forum met for the first time in November 2023, in June and November 2024 and in March and July 2025.

On 14 July 2005, the forum marked the launch of the new Richmond Climate and Nature Strategy (2025 to 2030). It welcomed a panel of local experts to discuss the five priority themes in the new strategy: buildings, travel and air, nature, resources and resilience.

Watch a recording of the forum.

We would like to thank the following speakers for their insightful contributions:

  • Rachel Purdon - Head of Sustainability at RGB Kew
  • Marguerite Murdoch - local architect
  • Tim Lennon - Richmond Cycling Campaign
  • Simon Westgarth - Richmond Furniture Scheme
  • Myszka Gużkowska - Barnes Common

The next Richmond Sustainability Forum will be in the autumn. Tickets will be available to book on Eventbrite.

Developing the new Richmond Climate and Nature Strategy

In developing our new draft Richmond Climate and Nature Strategy (2025 to 2030), we conducted a series of resident, community, and stakeholder workshops throughout 2024 and 2025. These workshops aimed to capture the views of people who live, work, and study in the borough.

We launched our public engagement platform, inviting participation through surveys and an interactive map. You can view the feedback we received from this initial consultation stage, which ended on Tuesday 31 December 2024, in the feedback section of the platform.

We also launched a ‘Climate Community Reporter’ scheme to extend our outreach by working in partnership with the community. This initiative aims to encourage valuable dialogue and gather insights to inform the new strategy.

The draft Richmond Climate and Nature Strategy (2025 to 2030) was open for public consultation from February to 5 May 2025.

Community input is vital, and we are committed to keeping the views, concerns, and priorities of our residents and partners at the heart of what we deliver.

Climate Community Reporters

We commissioned an external independent partner to develop a method of capturing stories and insights from around the borough to help shape our strategy. Based on a ‘community reporter’ methodology 18 residents were selected to represent the diversity our borough brings. The aim was to explore what climate change means to our residents and where greater support is needed

The Climate Community Reporters enabled a rich independent dialogue in our neighbourhoods, highstreets, community centres, and open spaces – exploring awareness and appetite for individual and collective responsibility. It enabled a more systemic exploration of the barriers and opportunities facing our residents, the role of the council, how our collective action is interwoven, and opportunities to work better together.

The Climate Community Reporter final report was published in February 2025.
