Improve your brain health this Dementia Action Week

14 May 2026

We are working with local partners to help residents take simple, positive steps to support their brain health, stay well for longer, and reduce their risk of or delay dementia.

Dementia is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK – but there is growing evidence that many cases can be prevented or delayed. In fact, up to 45% of dementia cases may be linked to factors we can influence through simple lifestyle changes, such as managing blood pressure, quitting smoking, looking after our hearing and staying active. Recent evidence highlighted 14 risk factors for dementia and many of them are preventable or can be minimised through simple lifestyle changes.

Dementia Action Week events

This year's Dementia Action Week takes place from 18 to 24 May. Join Age UK, the Alzheimer's Society and other partners at free events and activities throughout the week.

Working toward a Dementia Friendly Richmond

Becoming more dementia-friendly means more than just raising awareness. It’s about creating a community where people living with dementia and those who care for them feel understood, welcomed, supported and included in everyday life.

We continue to support a more dementia-friendly borough where small actions by all of us can make a big difference.

Find out how you can support the important, ongoing work of Dementia Friendly Communities Richmond, a Council-supported initiative coordinated by Age UK Richmond, which works with local people, organisations and businesses committed to making our borough more accessible and inclusive.

Learn how to help lower your risk of dementia through healthy lifestyle choices.
