New wetlands for a greener borough
5 June 2026
In Richmond, we’re fortunate to have the River Thames winding through our borough, shaping the places where people walk, relax and connect with nature.
It is also where tidal waters and river waters meet, which causes sudden rises in water levels. This can leave towpaths and nearby land damp for a while.
We have been working with Thames Landscape Strategy to explore how rising water levels can be managed by looking after our green spaces in the floodplain in a more joined up way. We are exploring options to create new wetland areas at Old Deer Park and Buccleugh Gardens.
We are hoping to:
- Restore natural floodplains so they can cope better with climate impacts and remain accessible
- Improve the ecological status of the tidal Thames
- Create backwater and wetland habitats to support more wildlife
The new wetlands will create extra space for tidal and river water to spread out. These areas are designed to temporarily hold floodwater while still supporting healthy, natural habitats and wildlife. The projects will also help improve public access and drainage after flood events.
