Care for wildlife while you enjoy the parks

26 June 2026

As the warm weather arrives, our parks become the perfect place for a walk, a picnic, and to enjoy nature. These spaces are special because we share them with wildlife, and protecting them starts with small thoughtful choices.

Feed wildfowl responsibly

Feeding wildlife is a lovely moment of connection. Many of us grew up tossing bread into the water, but it’s not the healthiest choice for birds.

If you would like to offer the birds a treat, choose natural foods that support their wellbeing. Uncooked oats, unsalted cooked rice, bird seed mixes, or unsalted nuts are better for birds’ health than bread. Another easy way to help is by placing food directly into the water rather than on pavements or paths. This keeps the area clean and ensures the birds, not unwanted pests, enjoy the snack.

Find out what you can feed the birds.

Keep our parks clean and safe

From our accessible Friendly Parks for All to historic parks and gardens, our borough offers a range of outdoor spaces to enjoy.

To protect these green spaces and the wildlife that depends on them, all fires and barbecues are strictly prohibited. Open flames can scorch grass, damage habitats, and pose a fire risk during warm dry weather. Keeping our parks fire free helps preserve the landscapes we all enjoy.

As we all do our bit to look after these shared spaces, please take your litter home if the bins are full. You can also report overflowing bins online or by using the QR code on the bin itself.
