Civic Pride Fund helps Orange Tree Theatre open doors to all

Our Civic Pride Fund has supported Orange Tree Theatre’s redevelopment project, helping more people enjoy and take part in theatre. 

As part of the works, the Theatre has removed its front entrance steps, creating level access so all visitors can enter the building together.

The wider redevelopment project aims to transform the experience for both audiences and artists. Alongside the removal of the entrance steps, a new lift will be installed to provide access to all levels, and a new accessible toilet will be created. Wheelchair spaces in the auditorium will also be tripled, and for the first time, wheelchair users will be able to perform on stage.

Orange Tree Theatre’s Artistic Director, Tom Littler, said: “The demolition of our front steps is a symbolic moment in our development project; this whole project is centred on removing barriers and improving accessibility to the Orange Tree, as we continue to evolve to meet our audiences’ needs. We believe that everybody has a right to enjoy this theatre. We want the experience of coming to our theatre to be easy and stress-free, so theatregoers can concentrate on enjoying our productions and having a wonderful time.”

The Orange Tree Theatre’s £4.5 million capital project is now well underway and hopes to complete Spring 2027. you can find out more and donate.

Throughout the building works, the Orange Tree remains open and is presenting more productions than ever, both at the Theatre, using a temporary entrance, and at external venues.
