Keeping residents free from violence and abuse this Christmas and beyond

20 December 2023

The financial strain of Christmas coupled with the challenges many have experienced this year can create a dangerous combination which means there is an anticipated increase in domestic abuse over the festive period.

Even though schools, workplaces, GP surgeries and other ‘safe places’ will be closed for the holidays, residents are reminded of the 24-hour help available to those experiencing domestic abuse by calling the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247 for confidential support. If you or anyone else is in immediate danger, always call the police on 999.

Domestic abuse is any incident of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of their gender of sexuality. The abuse can be psychological and emotional, violent or threatening behaviour, physical and sexual, controlling or coercive behaviour and economic abuse.

Victims often do not realise they are being abused. We are asking everyone to look out for their friends, neighbours and family members, and to reach out to them if it is safe to do or seek advice from the National Domestic Violence Helpline.
