The School Street is proposed along Vernon Road from Sheen Lane to Church Avenue, South Worple Way from Sheen Lane to Church Avenue and includes Howgate Road and Oaklands Road.

Hours of operation

The School Street will operate Monday to Friday from 8 to 8.45am and 3.30 to 4.15pm, during term time only.

How it works

Signs notify drivers of the School Street operating times.

The School Street signs will still be displayed during school holidays and half term breaks. It is not a statutory requirement to remove, cover or close them.

Shared ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras may also enforce the restrictions in future.

Exemptions

During the operating times people walking, scooting, using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and cycles (including adapted cycles) are able to enter the School Street.

Motor vehicles are prohibited during the operating times, subject to a limited number of exemptions. Find out more about School Streets exemptions.

Next steps

We undertook a pre-trial consultation for this proposal.

Following positive feedback and engagement with residents and the school, the School Street scheme was reported to the January 2023 Transport and Air Quality Committee (Item 30).

Feedback from residents requested the School Street be extended and the restricted area was therefore increased up to Church Avenue.

Extending past Church Avenue would result in too many closure points and potential for filtering through unsuitable roads making the scheme unfeasible and unmanageable.

A School Street trial and consultation alongside started on 24 April 2023 under and experimental Traffic Order.

The School Street scheme was approved to be made permanent at the February Transport and Air Quality committee meetingĀ (Item 9).

We will continue to endeavour to make School Streets more visible in the borough whilst still using the regulation DfT signs as is necessary to make them enforceable.
