Start your active journey

Whatever your age or ability, there's strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life.

Benefits

Getting active more regularly doesn’t just improve physical appearance – it can benefit your overall wellbeing. Exercise has fantastic benefits for long-term health, like lowering your risk of developing preventable illnesses such as heart disease and dementia.

It has also been shown to:

  • Improve sleep quality - enjoy better and more restful sleep
  • Boost self-esteem - enhance your confidence and self-worth
  • Increase energy levels - feel invigorated and ready to tackle your day
  • Increase focus - boost your productivity and get more done in less time
  • Reduce stress - manage stress and anxiety levels effectively
  • Enhance social connections - build meaningful relationships through shared activities

Start small

By taking small, manageable steps and slowly working your way up, you will feel a noticeable change. Start with at least 10 minutes of activity each day and you will find yourself moving more in no time.

Did you know:

  • One hour of gardening uses the same amount of energy as 10 minutes of cycling
  • 30 minutes of deep cleaning can have the same impact as running a 10 minute mile
  • You can burn the same amount of energy washing your car for 25 minutes as you could going on a hike

There are plenty of other ways to get moving from taking the stairs, playing with your children or taking a walk in your nearest park.

Get active every day

Being physically active means moving your body so that your heart rate increases, you feel warmer and you breathe faster.

The UK Chief Medical Officer’s Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that adults should try to be active every day and aim to do at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, which works out to about 22 minutes each day. If you can, it’s always great to get moving even more.
