Community solar webinar ignites local interest

Richmond residents recently joined a webinar to explore how a new Community Energy Cooperative could support local solar projects and help bring clean, lower-cost energy to the borough.

The webinar was the second in a series of events delivered by Richmond Council and Community Energy London (CEL) to encourage residents to become founding members of a new Community Energy Cooperative in Richmond.

What is community energy?

Community energy projects bring local people together to develop renewable energy and energy-saving initiatives that benefit local communities. This can include installing solar panels on schools, community centres and other buildings, helping to reduce energy costs while generating income that can be reinvested locally.

Cllr Jim Millard, Deputy Leader of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and Lead Member for Finance and Resources, opened the webinar by expressing the Council’s support for an independent Richmond cooperative. Attendees then heard from community energy experts about what makes a good solar project, how community groups can navigate planning and legal requirements, and how projects can be organised and funded through a community energy cooperative. Speakers also shared practical insights from projects already operating elsewhere in London.

There are still opportunities for residents to get involved. The next event, which looks at The Benefits of Community Energy, will take place in person at Patch, Twickenham, on Wednesday 16 September.

Attendees will hear how community energy projects can help lower energy bills for community buildings, support local jobs and skills, and provide other benefits for local communities.

Residents interested in climate action, renewable energy, community projects, governance, finance, communications or volunteering are encouraged to attend and learn more about becoming part of Richmond's emerging community energy movement.
