Kew launches major fundraising appeal to save iconic Palm house

Community news on behalf of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew | 15 October 2026

Kew's iconic Palm House needs your help.

The Palm House has stood at the heart of Kew Gardens since 1848. But after almost 180 years, the warm, humid conditions that allow its remarkable plant collection to thrive have taken their toll on the building. It now faces an urgent need for major renovation.

Behind the Palm House's famous glass exterior is a living collection of tropical plants from around the world, including plants that are rare, threatened and even extinct in the wild. It offers a unique window into the natural world, inspiring thousands of visitors and school children every year through an immersive tropical rainforest.

The planned renovation will preserve the Palm House’s extraordinary heritage while bringing this landmark into the 21st century as Kew aims to make it the first net zero glasshouse of its kind.

You can support this vital renovation from just £25 by donating, sponsoring a pane of glass, or sponsoring a tropical plant species.

Additional sponsorship opportunities include sponsoring a step on one of the Palm House’s cast iron spiral staircases for £5,000, or sponsoring one of just 10 'Queen’s Beasts' that stand outside the Palm House. For more information about these higher level sponsorships, contact donate@kew.org.
