6 October 2025

England’s Red Roses lifted the trophy in front of 82,000 fans at Twickenham last month, capping off a record-breaking Women’s Rugby World Cup that captivated audiences across the UK and around the world.

The tournament set new records for attendance and engagement – with 444,000 tickets sold, fans from 133 countries attending, 53% of spectators female, and half experiencing women’s rugby live for the first time.

Councillor Alan Juriansz, Lead Member for Sport at Richmond Council, said: “Seeing the Red Roses lift the trophy has been incredible. The Women’s Rugby World Cup inspired girls and women across the borough to get active, and we’re committed to creating even more opportunities for women in sport.”

In the lead-up to the final on 27 September, the Council supported a range of activities across the borough, including digital campaigns, community events, fan zones, and school tournaments, bringing the spirit of the tournament to residents and visitors.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, added: “This tournament was a generational moment for sport.

“Richmond hosted events that brought the excitement of the Women’s Rugby World Cup to our community, and now we must keep the momentum going – making sport inclusive and accessible.”

Across the UK, fans watched 56 million hours, generating 905 million social media impressions, with 95% of attendees planning to return for future fixtures.

Through its Richmond Moves for a Healthier Borough strategy, the Council is building on this success, empowering women and girls to take part in sport, leadership, volunteering, and employment opportunities.

With the Red Roses’ victory and record-breaking engagement, Richmond Council is committed to creating lasting opportunities for participation and inspiration for all ages.
