Celebrating Richmond’s local legend in Black heritage
31 October 2025
On Thursday 30 October, Eel Pie Museum hosted a special opening event to launch the Jon Daniel exhibition, supported by the Council as part of Black History Month celebrations.
The exhibition, which is set to run throughout the year, honours the legacy of Jon Daniel, an award-winning creative of African Caribbean heritage, former Richmond resident, and an alumnus of Richmond College, who passed away in 2017.
Councillor Nancy Baldwin, Spokesperson for Communities, Equalities and the Voluntary Sector, said: “Richmond is proud to claim Jon Daniel as one of our own. It is an honour to focus the community’s attention on him - the artist, the activist, the man.”
Michelle Whitby, Eel Pie Island Museum curator and friend of Jon Daniel, said: “We are very proud to be able to pay tribute to Jon, here at the Eel Pie Museum. His work is as inspiring and positive as Jon was, and we hope that having a piece of his legacy in the museum will introduce him to a wider audience and keep on spreading the positivity.”
Recognised as one of the most influential Black creatives of his generation, Jon was a strong advocate for the promotion of the rich historical legacy of the African diaspora. In addition to creating campaigns for a diverse range of clients, including International Business Machines Corporation, the Inland Revenue, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, Virgin Direct NHS Careers and Soul II Soul, Jon is also known for his AFRO SUPA® HERO exhibition and brand. This project is based on his personal collection of Black action figures and comic books, which was first on display at the V&A Museum of Childhood.
We are honoured to support this exhibition and celebrate Jon Daniel’s enduring impact on Black British culture and creativity. Find out more about the exhibition.
