Celebrate Black History Month in Richmond upon Thames

2 October 2023

Join Richmond upon Thames in celebrating Black History Month throughout the month of October.

Black History Month is a brilliant opportunity to learn about black culture and get involved with various activities that promote Richmond’s multicultural heritage. It is also a chance to discover more about the vital role black communities have played and continue to play in shaping the borough.

This year’s theme is 'Saluting Our Sisters’, highlighting the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. Black History Month will also acknowledge the lives and stories of Black Britons who were living in the UK before the arrival of Empire Windrush 1948.

Residents are invited to take part in the range of events across Richmond upon Thames showcasing the diverse cultures of black people and their voices. From immersive art installations at Orleans House Gallery to theatre performances at The Exchange and Orange Tree Theatre, the month will be an opportunity to explore black history, heritage and culture.

Cllr Nancy Baldwin, Spokesperson for Communities, Equalities and the Voluntary Sector said:

"This year's theme, ‘Saluting Our Sisters’ is a particularly wonderful one as we contemplate the history, heritage and contributions made by black women to our community and to the nation as a whole. I encourage all residents to get involved – by attending some of the events on offer and by reflecting on the achievements of our diverse community. By celebrating diversity and reclaiming black history, we can build a community where every Richmond resident can thrive.”
