Recycle for Richmond

5 November 2025

Did you know that 78% of what ends up in Richmond’s rubbish bins could have been recycled? That’s a huge opportunity to save resources, cut emissions, and help keep our borough clean and green.

This November, we’re launching Recycle for Richmond – a community-wide campaign to help everyone across the borough recycle more, waste less, and understand exactly what belongs in each bin and box.

Why it matters

When recyclable materials end up in the rubbish, they’re lost for good. Recycling keeps valuable materials in use, reduces the need for new raw resources, and helps to cut carbon emissions.

A great example right here in Richmond is how your food waste is put to good use. Leftover scraps like vegetable peelings, tea bags, and meat bones are turned into fertiliser that helps grow the next generation of crops – the very same ones that may return to our supermarket shelves.

The process also produces biogas, which supplies the National Grid and fuels the trucks collecting the food waste from the transfer stations. By recycling for Richmond, you’re helping to power a circular, sustainable system right here at home. Every caddy counts!

What’s happening

Each week throughout November, we’ll shine a spotlight on a different recyclable material – from food waste and mixed containers to paper and card.

You’ll find:

  • Simple tips to make recycling easier at home
  • Clear guidance on what can and can’t be recycled
  • Answering frequently asked questions about recycling

Small actions - like rinsing pots, tubs, or putting your teabags in your caddy - really do make a big difference across our borough.

Get involved

We want to hear from you! Share your favourite recycling tips, stories, or reasons for recycling, and help inspire your neighbours to do their bit.

Throughout the campaign, we’ll be celebrating Recycling Champions from every town in Richmond.
