Take a step towards a smoke-free life this World No Tobacco Day
27 May 2026
Quitting smoking doesn’t have to feel overwhelming, and you don’t have to do it alone. This World No Tobacco Day (31 May) could be the perfect moment to take your first step towards a healthier, smoke-free lifestyle.
With the right support, you’re four times more likely to succeed quitting smoking than if you try alone, and here in Richmond, free help is available to make quitting easier.
Why quit?
Smoking is still one of the biggest causes of ill health locally and in the UK. The 2025 Annual Director of Public Health Report showed that many people say they smoke to cope with stress or because it’s part of their daily routine – but in reality, smoking often keeps the cycle of addiction going rather than solving the problem.
The good news is that you can break the cycle and there is support available is designed to fit around your life.
Common myths about smoking and the truth
Find out the truth behind common myths.
Myth: Smoking helps me cope with stress
Reality: Smoking only gives short-term relief. As nicotine levels drop, cravings return – often making stress feel worse over time. Quitting can actually help improve your overall wellbeing.
Myth: Vaping isn’t helpful for quitting
Reality: For adult smokers, vapes can be an effective tool to quit – especially when combined with expert support. They help manage cravings while avoiding the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke. Vaping is not recommended for children, young people or non-smokers.
Myth: Quitting is just about willpower
Reality: Smoking is an addiction. Withdrawal symptoms like irritability or anxiety are your body adjusting – not a lack of willpower. The right support can make a big difference.
