Green light for Stag Brewery redevelopment, opening door to new homes and school in Mortlake

Richmond Council has welcomed the Planning Inspectorate’s decision to approve the long-awaited redevelopment of the former Stag Brewery site – a move that will bring new homes, a secondary school, and improved public spaces to Mortlake.
The site, which stood vacant for almost a decade, will be transformed into 1,075 new homes – including 65 affordable homes – alongside a new secondary school with sixth form.
The scheme also includes over 10,000 square metres of commercial space, upgrades to local infrastructure, and public realm improvements – such as new pedestrian and cycle routes, green spaces, and better access to the River Thames and surrounding areas.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said the decision provides a clear way forward for one of the borough’s most significant brownfield sites that has long remained underutilised.
“The redevelopment of the Stag Brewery site presents an opportunity for the whole community,” he said.
“While we know this scheme has attracted a mix of views, our priority is to ensure the development delivers real benefits for Mortlake – from new homes and school places to jobs and public spaces.
“If delivered well, the scheme has the potential to create a well-connected and sustainable neighbourhood that reflects the needs of current and future generations in Mortlake.
“We’ll now work closely with the applicants to make sure the scheme is brought forward in a way that strengthens Mortlake’s character and delivers the quality and ambition our residents rightly expect,” Councillor Roberts said.
Richmond Council will continue to engage with residents, partners, and the developer to ensure the next stages of the redevelopment are progressed transparently and with community interests at their core.
