Enjoy our green spaces responsibly this spring and summer

28 May 2025

Our parks and open spaces are perfect for enjoying the longer days of spring and summer. As we spend more time outdoors, it’s important to remember these areas are shared with local wildlife.

By feeding birds responsibly and looking after wildlife while out with dogs, we can all help to keep our parks clean, safe and welcoming for all - humans and animals alike.

Help keep our birds healthy and safe

Feeding birds may seem like a kind gesture, but not all food is good for them. Items like bread, pasta and processed foods can make birds and other animals unwell and leave behind waste that attracts pests. If you do feed the birds, please limit to small quantities of grain or birdseed.

It’s also worth remembering that during the breeding season, from March to September, young birds are especially vulnerable. Disturbances from dogs off-lead can cause nesting birds to abandon their eggs or young. To help protect our feathered residents, please keep dogs on leads near ponds and other nesting areas, especially places like Barnes Pond, where birdlife is particularly active.

Looking after our parks with your pup

Our parks are wonderful places to walk your dog, and we love seeing residents and their furry friends enjoying these spaces. To help protect both wildlife and visitors, we kindly ask that dogs are kept on leads in sensitive wildlife areas and that owners always clean up after them. Dog waste can carry harmful parasites and pollute our parks, so disposing of it properly helps keep these shared spaces pleasant for everyone.

Let’s enjoy the outdoors - together

Whether you’re out for a peaceful walk, a jog with your dog or a quiet moment by the water, your small actions can make a big difference. By taking a few simple steps, we can all enjoy our beautiful natural spaces while protecting the wildlife that calls them home.
