New water safety equipment installed along Thames in Mortlake and Barnes
24 March 2026
Nine new water safety throwline boards have been installed along the Thames towpath between the White Hart pub and Barn Elms Boathouse.
The new boards, located along the Mortlake and Barnes stretch of the river, house emergency throwline equipment that can be used to help someone in trouble in the water. They build on a network of water safety boards already in place at other locations along the Thames towpath across the borough.
The River Thames is a much loved part of Richmond upon Thames, but it can also be unpredictable and dangerous. Cold water shock, strong currents and hidden hazards mean that entering the water can put lives at risk. These additional safety measures are part of our ongoing work with partners to improve public safety along the river and help people respond quickly and safely in an emergency.
What to do if you see someone in trouble in the water
If you see someone struggling in the river:
- Raise the alarm – call 999 and ask for the Coastguard or the London Fire Brigade
- Throw them a line – look out for an emergency throw bag located along the river. If you are going to swim in the river, make sure you know how to use one. If you can’t see a throwline, throw something that floats or that they can hold on to
- Stay safe – do not enter the water yourself
Residents and visitors are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the location of water safety equipment along the towpath and to report any damaged or missing equipment when they spot it.
