Richmond’s historic hospital transformed into new affordable homes

The latest milestone in a major drive to provide more than 1,000 new, high-quality genuinely affordable homes to the borough has been delivered with the completion of 15 homes in the newly restored former Richmond Royal Hospital site.

The site – including a once-disused Grade II listed building – has now been brought back into community use as part of a wider 71-home redevelopment.

Speaking during a visit today, Councillor Chris Varley, Lead Member for Housing, said: “This is Richmond at its best; protecting our heritage while delivering the affordable homes residents need.

“We’ve taken a much-loved building and given it a new purpose for the community. It’s another step in our mission to deliver more than a thousand new social and affordable homes, building foundations for a fairer borough.”

The 15 new homes developed by RHP include four shared ownership properties and 11 homes for London Affordable Rent, with one wheelchair-accessible family home.

The redevelopment retains the hospital’s historic character while upgrading it for modern living. Refurbished sash windows, secondary glazing, strong insulation and sustainable design mean the homes are warm, efficient and built to last.

Councillor Jim Millard, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Finance, added: “These are 15 high-quality, genuinely affordable homes for local families. This is about pushing forward with the kind of housing delivery residents expect: practical, high quality and rooted in community need.”
