Piling begins at Twickenham Riverside, paving the way for construction

Work to lay the foundations of the much-anticipated Twickenham Riverside regeneration is beginning, as specialist piling works start on site this week – marking a major step forward in the transformation of the town’s waterfront.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said: “We’re now moving firmly into the next phase of delivering a new riverside for Twickenham.

“Residents have already seen big changes with the demolition works completed – and the start of piling means we’re now putting the foundations in place for the new public spaces, homes and riverside this scheme will deliver.”

Piling creates the deep structural supports needed for buildings and flood defences, and is expected to take around four weeks.

In preparation for the works, a large piling rig has been delivered to the site. Residents and visitors may notice increased activity as the machinery is installed and works begin. 

Traffic marshals will oversee vehicle movements and deliveries will be carefully coordinated to minimise disruption in the surrounding streets. Monitoring equipment remains in place across the site to measure noise, dust and vibration in real-time throughout the works. 

Councillor Jim Millard, Deputy Leader of Richmond Council and Lead Member for Finance, said: “This project represents a major investment in Twickenham and our borough’s future.

“While you might not always see the early construction work, it’s laying the groundwork for a thriving, welcoming new riverside that residents, businesses and visitors will enjoy for many years to come.”

The regeneration will create a new civic heart for the town centre, reconnecting Twickenham with the River Thames. The piling works follow the recent completion of demolition along King Street.

• 45 new homes – including 50% affordable housing – alongside new shops, café and community spaces
• Improved pedestrian connections between King Street, Wharf Lane, Water Lane and the riverside
