New Simpler Recycling changes are coming

10 March 2026

From the end of March, the government’s Simpler Recycling legislation comes into effect. These national changes are designed to make recycling more consistent across the country.

Recycle more in your mixed recycling

As part of the changes, you can now recycle even more items in your mixed recycling container (your black box or bin).

Cartons such as Tetra Paks should now be flattened and placed in your black box or bin, not put in your paper recycling.

New items you can now recycle

You can now recycle the following additional items in your mixed recycling:

  • Aluminium tubes (for example empty tomato paste or purée tubes)
  • Plastic tubes (for example empty toothpaste tubes)

What you can already recycle in your black box or bin

The new items are in addition to the items you can already recycle in your black box/bin, including:

  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Food tins and drink cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Aluminium foil and trays (flattened, clean and free from food)

By making sure items are clean, empty and placed in the correct container, you’re helping recycling to be processed efficiently.

Thank you for doing your bit

Every item in the correct bin, box or caddy makes a difference and helps us keep the borough cleaner, greener and more sustainable for everyone.
