Council-backed, £8m sports facility helps students and community stay active

26 March 2026

A new state of the art sports hall and floodlit 3G pitches at The Richmond upon Thames School are already proving to be a vital asset for both students and the wider community, marking a highly successful first full year since opening.

Speaking during a visit to the school, Councillor Julia Cambridge, Chair of Richmond’s Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Standing here on site and seeing these facilities in action, it’s clear just how much they mean to both the school and the wider community. You can feel the energy – young people training and local clubs making the most of the space.”

The modern facility includes a bright activity studio, a four court sports hall and spacious changing areas. Outside, floodlit artificial pitches – including a full size pitch for football matches and rugby training – provide year round opportunities for sport. Students use the spaces throughout the school day, while community groups and residents can book them outside teaching hours.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council said: “This is exactly the kind of investment we want to see – creating high-quality spaces that support active, healthy lives and bring people together. It’s something the whole borough can be proud of.”

Since opening in November 2024, the facilities have rapidly become home to a wide range of local clubs – from netball, volleyball and cricket to football and rugby – with activities running throughout the week on both the indoor courts and the floodlit pitches.

The project was made possible through £2.2m of investment from Richmond Council, alongside £5.9m of additional funding secured from the Department for Education.

Kelly Dooley, Head Teacher of The Richmond upon Thames School, said the sports hall is a real asset for students and the local community. “It allows young people to learn and train in a professional environment, while community groups are able to access high-quality facilities through our lettings programme. We are grateful to the council for their partnership in delivering a space that brings people together and supports active, healthy lifestyles.”

The sports hall and pitches form part of the Richmond Education and Enterprise Campus, designed to bring together excellent education with practical skills development and create new opportunities for local young people.

Completed in October 2025, the full campus comprises a purpose built school building for 810 pupils, Clarendon School and Capella House for SEN students, and Richmond upon Thames College.

Councillor Cambridge added: “This campus shows what’s possible when organisations work together with a shared purpose. It’s a vibrant space full of opportunities for young people – and a facility that will continue to support the community for many years to come.”
