Recognising, supporting and celebrating people with learning disabilities

13 June 2025

Learning Disability Awareness Week (16 to 22 June) celebrates the contributions of people with learning disabilities and learn about the local support available. Find out how to get involved.

This year’s theme, 'Do you see me?', focuses on ensuring that people with learning disabilities are seen, heard and valued.

To mark the week, local charity Richmond Mencap is hosting a celebration event to showcase initiatives supporting people with learning disabilities. The event will include music, creative performances and participation from local charities, businesses and service providers. Come along for a fun and inspiring afternoon!

Supporting people with learning disabilities

In Richmond, our adult social care services are here to help you stay independent when you need support. We offer advice, guidance and tailored assistance to help you lead your life as you choose to. See support for people with learning disabilities.

You can start by booking a chat with us, we’ll get to understand what you enjoy and what kind of support you might need. After our conversation, we’ll complete an assessment and agree together on the right support for you. This could include:

  • A carer or personal assistant that can support you
  • Asking friends or family to help you with certain tasks
  • Deciding on where you live and who you live with
  • Equipment and/or technology that can help you be independent
  • Going to activities and organisations to make friends or do things you enjoy
  • Support for your carer

You can also reach out to local organisations for information, support, advice, education and activities for people with learning disabilities. They can help individuals achieve what matters most to them and support them in staying as independent as possible.
