Latest Hammersmith Bridge update shows a ‘poverty of ambition’, says Transport Chair

1 July 2026

Councillor Alexander Ehmann, Richmond Council’s Deputy Leader and Chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee, has criticised Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s recommendation to limit their bid for funding to measures that will keep Hammersmith Bridge open only for pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic.

Following the latest update on plans for a ‘phased’ reopening of the bridge, Cllr Ehmann said: “This proposal is not good enough and shows a poverty of ambition.

“After years of full or partial closure, it is hugely disappointing to see Hammersmith and Fulham Council row back on fuller refurbishment that would enable public transport connectivity.

“The needs of residents who cannot walk or cycle over Hammersmith Bridge are not being properly considered. Residents have told us that they are restless to see buses and blue light services using the bridge again.

“Maintaining the bridge with its present uses, is simply not good enough.

“This Council will continue to make the case for a ‘Better Bridge’ for our residents.”
