Start making your neighbourhood greener: apply now for a climate action microgrant

29 July 2025

Whether you’re a warm-hearted resident with a passion for nature or part of a local group with a great idea, our climate action microgrants offer funding to support projects that help local people and nature adapt to a changing climate, making a lasting difference in our communities.

As we enjoy the outdoors this summer, it’s the perfect time to think about how we can care for the environment and connect with our communities. Since April 2024, our climate action microgrants scheme has supported a diverse range of community-led environmental initiatives across the borough, each tailored to local needs and opportunities.

The rolling microgrants scheme is open to all kinds of projects, big or small, new or already underway, that aim to inspire climate action and support sustainable behaviours in the long term.

Previous projects

Get inspired by what’s possible. Find out about the creativity, commitment, and impact of local groups who have used the microgrant to make a meaningful difference in their neighbourhoods:

Composting workshops

Led by Habitats & Heritage and ETNA, these three sold-out composting workshops welcomed 70 attendees of all ages. Each session featured a quiz and hands-on composting demonstrations. Participants appreciated the practical tips and friendly atmosphere, highlighting the value of learning, sharing, and seeing composting in action. The organisers shared, “It is a good fund for us to offer small one-off activities to spread the work or educate different community groups. It is great that the application is so easy, and it means you can put together an idea quite quickly."

Gardening club and allotment

This funding supported Kew Riverside Primary School's gardening project with 11 regular after-school club members and activities designed for all 90 pupils. The project encouraged hands-on learning, teamwork, and environmental awareness, giving children the chance to grow food, connect with nature, and develop practical skills. What’s more, the success has inspired an Eco Day next school term, featuring upcycling, planting, and nature-based activities to further enhance the school environment. The driving force behind the project said, “Like many schools, we have limited funds for these types of project, and so it was very rewarding to be able to apply directly, as a teacher, with a clear outline of what we needed. Thank you so much - it has really kick started a great initiative at school with wonderful learning opportunities and much enjoyment.”

Restoring a pocket parklet site

The microgrants supported a one-day transformation of Queen’s Bench parklet in Hampton. Volunteers built habitats, planted 92 pollinator-friendly plants, and improved soil health. The project sparked local pride, inspired future care, and led to a touching moment from a resident who proposed on the park bench. One resident, drawn in by the activity, shared that he had proposed to his wife on the park bench years ago. Inspired by the improvements, he returned later to tell her all about it. Moments like this show how revitalised greenspaces can reconnect people with cherished memories and community.

The organisers said, "The microgrant provided a great opportunity to improve smaller, urban sites which are often overlooked by wider ecological management plans. Although the site was small, this project showed how beloved this greenspace was by local residents. Continuing to offer funding opportunities for us to be able to connect local residents with their greenspaces, whilst simultaneously producing positive environmental outcomes.”
