Major upgrades coming for two of Richmond's much-loved leisure centres
3 July 2025
Richmond’s flagship leisure centres are set for major facility upgrades and service improvements – making it easier for residents of all ages to stay active.
Under plans approved by the Council, Pools on the Park and Teddington Pools and Fitness Centre will benefit from major upgrades – including better facilities, expanded programmes, and services designed to meet community needs. The improvements will be delivered through a new 10-year leisure contract with Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), starting from 1 October 2025.
Other leisure centres – including Hampton, Shene, Teddington Sports Centre, Whitton, and the new Active Hampton Centre – will continue to be managed by the Council.
Councillor Alan Juriansz, Vice Chair of the Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports Committee, said:
"This is a big moment for our local leisure services – and represents a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of our community.
"GLL bring expertise and a strong track record of delivering modern, inclusive leisure services. They’ll help us strengthen what’s already valued while raising the bar for quality and access.
"We’ll continue to oversee operations to ensure the service meets the needs of our diverse community,” said Councillor Juriansz.
As part of the new contract, GLL will:
- Upgrade facilities and equipment
- Improve accessibility and inclusivity
- Expand fitness and swim programmes.
Peter Bundey, CEO of GLL said:
"We are delighted to be a long-term partner with the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames to deliver leisure services within the leisure centres and importantly out in the Richmond community.
"As a charitable social enterprise that focuses on social impact and community wellbeing, our values are aligned with the Council’s ambitious Richmond Moves for a Healthier Borough Strategy.
"Our investment plans and management experience will be an important factor in helping us to grow the reach and impact of the leisure facilities and wellbeing services across Richmond residents.
"We are committed to engage and encourage new and existing users to live more active and healthier lifestyles."
The move supports the Council’s wider ambitions through its Leisure Strategy, Richmond Moves for a Healthier Borough (2024–29), which sets out a plan to help more people lead active, healthy lives in spaces that bring communities together.
GLL operate leisure services under its 'Better' brand.
