Richmond tops the list for most active young people

8 January 2025

Richmond upon Thames’ children and young people are moving more than anywhere else in England.

According to the latest Active Lives survey, 62.1% of young people in the borough are meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guideline of 60 minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily - well above the national average of 47.2%. That means the borough’s young people are doing their daily hour of exercise that increases their heart rate.

This success reflects our commitment to encouraging active lifestyles through Richmond Moves. By promoting inclusive and accessible opportunities that can be found through the London Sport Map and Joy App, showcasing the wealth of local sports clubs and signposting to the various ways people can take steps to becoming active, the borough is ensuring that young people have plenty of opportunities move more.

Our new Leisure Strategy also shows how we will continue leading the way for a more active borough. With a five-year plan to make sports and physical activity a natural part of daily life for residents of all ages, we are investing in community sports, active travel and environmentally friendly facilities with fairer pricing to help young people build habits that last a lifetime.
