Richmond road resurfacing running smoothly with over 90% of works complete

16 February 2026

Richmond Council’s highway maintenance programme is running smoothly and to schedule, with 91% of this financial year’s road resurfacing already complete and 81% of footpaths renewed.

Established in March last year, the record £21 million package of works is set to be delivered across three years, seeing roads and pavements across the borough undergo major upgrades to improve their infrastructure and safety.

Richmond upon Thames has also been recognised nationally for the strength of its highways investment programme. The Department for Transport (DfT) has awarded the borough a green rating for its robust plan to maintain and improve roads and pavements. As a result, the Council will receive an initial £1.2 million in additional funding from the DfT which will be invested in the coming financial year, enabling even more upgrades to be delivered for residents and road users.

More than 123,000 square metres of road has been resurfaced so far, in all corners of Richmond upon Thames, from Kew to Hampton. Planned and delivered on a priority basis, a different road every single day is currently being upgraded within the borough.

At the same time, the reconstruction and resurfacing of footpaths is also taking place, with enhanced street lighting making it easier and safer for people to walk within the borough.

Councillor Alexander Ehmann, Chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee, said: “We are making real visible changes to the roads and pavements that keep our borough moving, making daily journeys more enjoyable and safer for everyone.”

Twice the number of roads have been resurfaced this year compared to last, encompassing the repair of more than 500 potholes. Weather permitting, by the end of March, over 140,000 square metres of road across Richmond will have been upgraded.

Councillor Ehmann added: “Already this year we have delivered an unprecedented number of upgrades with more to be completed in the coming months and beyond. Our teams are working efficiently to prioritise the highways most in need, but rest assured every road resurfaced is one closer to a road near you.”
