New tool to help residents stay independent for longer

Ageing well is largely up to the choices we make every day, however with small steps and support, we can slow the speed of ageing and stay independent for longer.
Research shows that how we age is 25% genetic, which means that 75% is up to us and the choices we make to live healthier, happier lives and stay independent for longer.
Councillor Allen, Lead Member for Adult Social Care and Health and Chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board said: “Getting older doesn’t have to mean we stop being independent and there are small steps we can take to help reduce how getting older limits our lives.
“We have tools and services available in the borough to support residents to take these small daily steps to maintain their health and reduce the risk of conditions like heart disease, cancer and dementia.
“A new tool accessible right from your phone or any other online device is Independent Richmond, which helps you understand where you are on The Life Curve to help stay on track with healthy habits, keeping active and stay independent for longer."
Independent Richmond is an evidence-based tool using self-assessment to help you to understand the ageing process, and giving advice and information to keep active, eat well and connect with your community.
The tool will prompt you to answer a few simple questions about what tasks you are able to complete. For example, can you cut your own toenails? How easily can you get in and out of a chair?
Based on the information you share, the tool provides personalised advice about staying well, improving your fitness and wellbeing, and living independently.
Information is tailored to you, recommending local support services and simple and low-cost equipment such as raised toilet seats and grab rails that can help you around your home.
You can also track your healthy habits taking to improve your mobility, fitness and wellbeing. Research shows that when we measure our activities and progress, we are more likely to stick to our new routines. Even a few minutes a day can make a big difference and help you stay independent for longer.
You can access the easy to use tool through your internet browser or download Life Curve on the app store on your phone or mobile device, and choose Richmond upon Thames as your borough.
