Majority of new primary children in Richmond upon Thames get preferred school choice

17 April 2024

Ninety-nine percent of Richmond upon Thames primary school applicants have been offered a place at one of their first three preferred choices.

Yesterday (16 April), we made the initial allocation of reception class offers for this September. This year, the parents/carers of 1,865 children applied for a place – compared with 1,907 last year.

91% of children have been offered a place at their first preference primary school, compared with 90% in 2023; 99% have been offered one of their top three preferences compared with 98% last year, and the percentage of children receiving an offer for a preferred school overall remains at 99%.

Ian Dodds, Richmond Council's Director of Children's Services, said:

“Richmond’s schools are deservedly popular because they offer excellent, inclusive education for local children, and I am very pleased that a high percentage of parents have received an offer for one of their preferred schools.”
