Giving our residents a say on their safety

In our manifesto, we committed to ensuring that residents have real opportunities to have a say on decisions that impact them and their community. In keeping with this promise, we have launched a new survey asking you what needs to be done to keep our community safe.

We are currently drafting the new Community Safety Strategy alongside the Richmond upon Thames Community Safety Partnership (CSP) and want the priorities to accurately reflect what matters most to local residents and business. By working with our partners in the CSP, we have pledged to prevent and reduce the risk and harm of crime and antisocial behaviour in the borough, so that it continues to be a safe place for everyone.

Based on our findings, the priorities likely to feature in the strategy are:

  • Ensuring safer neighbourhoods by tackling crime and anti-social behaviour, burglary, motor vehicle crime and violent crime such as robbery and knife crime
  • Preventing violence against women and girls
  • Preventing offending and reducing reoffending
  • Tackling hate crime, extremism and radicalisation
  • Keeping children and young people safe

Through our partnership work, the borough has seen knife crime, residential burglary and vehicle crime fall as well as a promising reduction in robbery and hate crime. This means for the past three years, Richmond upon Thames has had the lowest crime rate in London but we know there is more to be done to prevent crime and protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

Community feedback has been key in directing the work we have delivered so far this year. Through our joint venture with the British Transport Police and other partners, we have signposted those feeling vulnerable at night to support at Richmond Station. The Safe Space has served residents navigating Richmond town centre on Friday and Saturday nights and will continue to do so this autumn, thanks to the positive response from residents and successful interventions.

By hearing from our communities, we are working to ensure everyone feels safe and respected. We recently invited residents to the Hate Crime Awareness event to learn more about our efforts to counter hate crime. When we collaborate with community members and partners, we can continue providing support to victims and reduce crime in Richmond.

That is why we want to you to take part in this survey. We are holding this consultation to hear your views before making decisions that affect you and your responses will help ensure the priority areas of the next strategy align with what residents think should be the focus.

Take part in the consultation and read more about local crime trends and community safety issues.
