Community Sport and Physical Activity Network (CSPAN)

At the heart of the Richmond Moves strategy is the creation of the Community Sports and Physical Activity Network (CSPAN). This is a borough-wide partnership bringing together local organisations, community and voluntary groups, and council services.

Together, the network’s vision is to increase access to sport, leisure, and physical activity for everyone in Richmond.

Aims and objectives

The CSPAN's aims and objectives are to:

  • Work together with local partners to create inclusive, safe and welcoming opportunities that help more residents get active
  • Keep track of its progress, making sure it is delivering what it set out to achieve and is making a positive impact
  • Build a shared understanding of local needs, improving how data is collected and used to shape future programmes
  • Share insights and recommendations with partners to support programmes that encourage more people to be active
  • Advocate the importance of physical activity and sport, helping to influence decisions locally, regionally and nationally

Chair

The CSPAN's appointed Chair is Ravi Arora (Multicultural Richmond Director).

He will act as a leader, connector and influencer for the strategy’s vision, helping to create a borough where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

The Chair will ensure that the strategy is delivered through an approach that is collaborative, cross-sector and representative of all communities within the borough. He will ensure that the key outcomes in the strategy are successfully delivered and the interests of residents are kept at the forefront of the network’s objectives.

Members

The CSPAN will appoint active members, who will be asked to commit to the group for an initial year. This will see each member play an active role in meetings every four months, sharing their experiences and knowledge with the group. Members will be identified by their specific area of expertise and will represent their sector by gathering information, insight, and advocating for the work of the CSPAN.

Members will be connected to local organisations and will be encouraged to represent their sector focusing on delivering wider impacts and outcomes for residents. They will help advocate for all our residents to have increased access to safe, quality, and engaging physical activity opportunities.

Membership changes

If an organisation resigns from the CSPAN or its representative changes, it should inform the Chair and administrators.

Group structure and activities

The overarching CSPAN group will include active members who can commit to meetings every four months. This will be the steering group who have strategic oversight and will work collectively to ensure the progression and delivery of the CSPAN’s action plan. This group will focus on identifying key priority areas, resources required for delivery, and solutions to challenges.

Subgroups will be created with members based on their expertise in key focus areas and their ability to support direct delivery of the action plan’s objectives. These subgroups will meet and communicate more regularly, feeding back to the overarching CSPAN group.

The Women and Girls Working Group have set out an action plan to boost participation by women and girls in sport and physical activity across Richmond. This links into the CSPAN’s priority areas, and a representative from the group will update the progress at each CSPAN meeting.
