Food waste in purpose-built flats
How to dispose of your food waste if you live in a purpose-built flat.
Weekly food waste collection service
Selected flats now receive a communal food waste recycling service. Residents of these flats have received caddies to help them store food waste separately and carry it to the communal food waste recycling bins at ground level. In addition, residents were provided with the starter roll of caddy liners and a leaflet informing how to use this service.
Food waste recycling initially started in 2019 on a trial basis, however now it is considered permanent with 5,170 flats currently receiving this service.
We are committed to rolling out this service to other properties with communal waste and recycling facilities. If you would like to find out if your flats are suitable for the new collection service, please contact foodrecycling@richmond.gov.uk.
In the meantime, if you do not yet receive this service please try to reduce your food waste and/or consider using a wormery or Bokashi home composting system (getcomposting.com), or set up communal home composting.
