Book an appointment to register a birth

It is a legal requirement to register a birth within 42 days. The birth must be registered at the Register Office in the borough where the birth took place.

Customer notice

In response to the Coronavirus pandemic and pending advice from Government, online bookings for appointments and ceremonies have been temporarily suspended until further notice.

Before you start

Make sure you have read the relevant guidance notes.

Mothers

Can register the birth alone, regardless of whether you are married to your baby’s father or not. However, if you are not married to baby’s father and wish to have his details entered in the register, then he must attend with you.

Fathers

If you are not married to the baby’s mother, then you must attend with her in order to have your details entered into the register.

You will need

  • The date of the baby’s birth
  • The location of the baby’s birth
  • Your availability for the appointment

What happens next

  • You will receive a confirmation with instructions for your appointment.
  • If you provided an email address you will receive an email confirmation with the details of your booking. If you do not receive this within one day please call 020 8831 1411.
  • Please arrive on time - if you are late we may not be able to see you. You must call 020 8891 1411 if you are unable to make your appointment.
