If a child has a statement of special educational needs, there must be a meeting each year to review what the statement says. This is called the annual review.
Before the annual review, the school must ask for reports from everyone involved with the child’s work. This will include:
The child can give their view of how they are doing. At least two weeks before the date of the review meeting, the school must send all the reports to all the people invited to the annual review.
After the annual review, the school writes a report. This report sets out the child’s progress and any changes the group recommends. The report must also explain clearly why we should continue the statement or end it. The school must send us this report within 10 school days of the review meeting. We then decide whether to change any part of the statement, to continue with it or to end it, depending on the information in the report.
In the annual review for children in year 9 (aged 13 and 14), it is very important to plan for what will happen after year 11 when the child may leave school or go to further education. Someone from Connexions (the careers service) will go to the review. They will supervise any plans for applying to colleges or arranging work experience with the school.
