Licence summary

If you exhibit, use or train performing animals, in England, Wales or Scotland, you must be registered with your local authority.

Applications must contain details about the animals and the performances they are to take part in. The registration fee is £169 and the certificate fee is £43.

This is a one off registration and there is no requirement to renew unless there are any significant changes. The same form can be used for new and renewal applications.

Eligibility criteria

The registration only applies to the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames residents.

Regulation summary

Application evaluation process

Once your application is received, a licensing officer will contact you to make arrangements to carry out an inspection of your premises.

The officer may be accompanied by an approved vet who will set the registration conditions.

Will tacit consent apply?

No. It is in the public interest that the authority must process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from the local authority within a reasonable period, please contact them.

Apply for a new licence or renew or amend an existing licence.

Consumer complaint

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the trader by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Citizens Advice can offer advice. From outside the UK contact the UK European Consumer Centre.

Other redress

A police officer or officer of the local authority may make a complaint to the local magistrates' court if they feel that animals have been subject to cruelty.
