Richmond upon Thames shortlisted for Small Business Friendly Borough Awards

Richmond Council’s Phoenix Enterprise Support Programme has been shortlisted for a Small Business Friendly Borough Award.
The Small Business Friendly Borough Awards celebrate local authority initiatives that support small and micro businesses and are open to all thirty-two London boroughs and the City of London Corporation.
In response to the pandemic, Richmond Council set up a comprehensive programme of free business supports for start-up and early-stage growth businesses called the Phoenix Enterprise Support Programme.
The Support Programme focused on sectors particularly badly hit by the pandemic. To date the programme has supported 800 local businesses, of which 337 are start-ups and 462 established Small and Mid-size Enterprises (SMEs).
The free support has included business health checks, webinars and Q&A sessions, peer focus groups and networking events as well as over 120 one-to-one personal mentoring sessions.
Richmond Council has also supported local independent retail businesses on the borough’s high streets by funding an e-trading platform called MyTown Shops which currently supports 66 retailers to trade online when fewer residents were visiting their high streets due to public health restrictions.
The Small Business Friendly Borough Awards ceremony takes place on 16 February 2022.
Cllr Richard Baker, Lead Member for Business and Growth, said:
“Supporting small businesses remains a priority for this Council. The pandemic has been a particularly difficult period for our small independent retailers who are the life blood of our high streets.
“The Phoenix Enterprise Support Programme has helped our local businesses and retailers who began trading during the pandemic to find their feet and helped other businesses pivot their business models to survive and thrive throughout the pandemic. If you are a small business, I would encourage you to join the Phoenix network and tap into the local networking from other small businesses. “
