Strawberry Hill House announces new tours

Community news on behalf of Strawberry Hill House | 3 February 2022

Strawberry Hill House have announced a new programme of events for 2022 including Gothic Romance and LGBTQ+ Heritage tours.

On the evening of 14 February, immerse yourselves in a world where romantic beauty and gothic fantasy combine. Take an atmospheric journey into the past, hearing remarkable stories from across the centuries, complete with intrigue, passion, mystery, and drama.

Guided by resident experts, the Strawberry Hill Gothic Romance Tour will reveal how his own fairytale castle inspired Horace Walpole to write the very first Gothic romance novel, The Castle of Otranto. Discover the tangled histories of his family as you explore different rooms and parts of this atmospheric house.

As part of LGBTQ+ History Month this February, Strawberry Hill is hosting a series of LGBTQ+ tours. Each tour will seek to explore more about Horace Walpole’s sexuality by investigating the correspondence between his network of friends and acquaintances, and how this might inform our interpretation of his house and collection.

As visitors are led through the house, the tour guides will reveal how Strawberry Hill enabled Walpole to build a unique identity for himself by his radical use of architecture, design, and antiquarianism.
