Your local businesses need you in the countdown to Christmas
14 December 2021
Residents of Richmond upon Thames are being reminded to shop local with our amazing small independent businesses, who really need support in the lead up to the Christmas.
Since the arrival of the Omicron variant and the introduction of new Government measures, local high streets are seeing a huge number of customers stay away – but this time, our businesses don’t have the financial support from the Government to help.
To encourage everyone to support their local business community, Richmond Council is continuing the #RichmondShopsLocal campaign. You can take a virtual tour of your local high street as well as the Visit Richmond pages, for shopping highlights in all of the Town Centres. Keep an eye on the Council’s social media channels for more ideas or view the Richmond Card offers list to bag a Christmas deal!
Government guidelines say it is safe to visit shops, hospitality, beauty and leisure, but you must wear a face-covering in most indoor settings (places where food and drink are consumed, like cafes, restaurants and bars are exempt).
If you would prefer to stay away from public places in the lead up to Christmas, there are still lots of ways you can support local business.
You can shop via the Council’s MyTown website where you can browse and buy products from over 50 shops based in the borough, including butchers and fishmongers, grocers, book shops, florists. You can then have your combined shopping brought to your doorstep in one electric bike delivery, or use the click and collect service.
Place your first order and receive £10 off. Simply use the code MTS10 at the checkout to redeem £10 off of your order*(Terms & Conditions apply*).
You can also:
- Shop online with your local favourites via their own websites
- Many businesses will offer a click and collect service via phone
- Consider postponing rather than cancelling any Christmas parties
- Use restaurants and cafes for take-away options
Cllr Richard Baker, Lead Member for Business, Economics and Employment for Richmond Council, said:
"Many businesses are facing a terrifying time, in particular the small independents you see on your local high streets. Instead of enjoying the boost of Christmas, trying to make up for losses incurred since the start of the pandemic, they are now faced with a loss of custom and no additional support from the Government like furlough.
"Earlier this year we ran a series of Community Conversations about the future of our high streets where you told us how much your high streets’ local businesses mean to you – now is the time for all of us to show them our support.
"Understandably, many people will want to stay as safe as possible ahead of Christmas. This doesn’t mean you need to resort to Amazon – so many of our local businesses offer online and other services which mean you can still buy from them without having to go into a public space. We also have the MyTown website which means you can browse products from lots of different shops and have them delivered to your door.
"If you are a retailer and do not have your own online presence, please do have a look at MyTown – it's totally free for you to use and also commission free."
