Richmond Bid answers call for phone box restoration

Release Date: 10 May 2017

The borough’s newest Business Improvement District (BID) has launched with a bang – agreeing to restore two iconic red phone boxes on Richmond Green that are Grade 2 listed.

Following a vote last year, from April 2017 Richmond Town Centre officially launched a BID. Raising funds through a local levy, businesses will now have a greater say in how the town is managed.

One of their first projects is the restoration of two vintage red phone boxes, located on The Green junction with Golden Court & Paved Court.

The Council and the Red Kiosk Company have given the BID permission to restore the classic installations back to their former glory.

The work has already commenced and will be completed in time for the Richmond May Fair this Saturday, 13 May, on Richmond Green.

Sean Gillen, Economic Development Officer for Richmond Council, said:

“The Richmond BID has launched with a bang! There are not many traditional phone boxes left in the borough. As a glowing symbol of British heritage they’ll become part of the visual townscape which is an important part of building the town’s distinctiveness and marketing potential – ultimately playing a part in attracting visitors to the town.

“This project is one of the first led by the Richmond business community. And now they are launched, together they will be working hard to deliver projects and campaigns that are needed to attract new investment to the town.

“We have worked together to develop the BID and are committed to continuing the partnership so Richmond town centre remains successful and is well positioned to meet the competitive pressures ahead."

Erick Kervaon, Chairman of Richmond BID, added:

“We are proud to provide the funding to restore the phone boxes back to their former glory as they are important to the heritage of the town centre. Over the next 5 years, the BID will invest £3.2m in undertaking other similar and larger initiatives to better promote Richmond and improve the look and feel of the area. We will use this money to achieve maximum tangible benefits for business and the wider community”.

The Richmond BID area covers the Town Centre area from Twickenham Rd in the north and includes Richmond Green and Richmond Riverside to the West, Red Lion St and Paradise Rd to the East, and Richmond Hill and Petersham Rd to the south.
