New Mayor presents awards for blooming marvellous posters

Release Date: 17 May 2017

A twelve year-old from Lady Eleanor Holles School was presented with an award for her artistic talents today (17 May), by the new Mayor of Richmond upon Thames.

Wenlan Chang, age 12, designed a stunning floral poster to represent this year’s Richmond in Bloom Merit Awards Gardening Competition.

Wenlan attended the event at York House, along with 13 other school children who were all shortlisted in the competition. It was the first event attended by the new Mayor, Cllr Lisa Blakemore. She presented each young artist with a commemorative certificate and special surprise pack of art materials.

All the award winning paintings will be on public viewing as part of the exhibition in June at the Landmark Arts Centre.

 Cllr Lisa Blakemore said:

“This year’s competition saw an excellent standard of entries. All the winner’s entries were well thought out, creative and bright.

“Wenlan’s poster used some really bright and bold colours and the design really stood out. Congratulations to all today’s winners and I look forward to seeing the winning design up around the borough.”

Chair of Richmond Borough in Bloom, Pat Schooling, added:

“Congratulations to everyone who entered this year’s poster competition. As always the standard of garden entries was first-rate as was the artistic efforts of our youngsters. The judges were looking for those which were bold, eye-catching, had artistic merit and also showed appreciation of flowers.

“The posters are always a great asset to our annual ‘in bloom’ campaigns, and the garden competitions gives us a great opportunity to reward the hard work of green-fingered residents who continue to do their bit to keep our borough looking great.”
