Team Richmond won all 5 of their qualifying matches to progress to the London Youth Games Boccia finals at Crystal Palace for the first time in their history.
The team of 6, made up of students from Orleans Park School, travelled to Westway Sports Centre on Thursday hoping to better last year’s 5th place finish. They were accompanied by a mini team from Strathmore School, who were getting their first taste of competitive Boccia.
The team from Orleans Park School came up against strong opposition in their morning round robin matches but victories over local rivals Kingston (4-2) and Wandsworth (3-0) set up a match against Hammersmith and Fulham to determine who would top the group. Victory was never in doubt and a 4-0 win saw Team Richmond progress to the quarter finals against Harrow.
After a 1-1 draw following two ends of play, the teams had to be separated by a sudden-death play-off and it was the final throw which decided the match and saw Richmond progress to the semi-finals to play for a place at Crystal Palace.
The semi-final saw Richmond up against Croydon, who had knocked the team out of the competition in the last two seasons. After winning the first end 1-0, the team held their nerve to secure a 2-0 victory and to progress to the finals which place at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Thursday 23 March. Along with the Boccia finals will be the Inclusive Zone Basketball competitions which also take place at Crystal Palace on 23 March.
Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Sport, Cllr Meena Bond, said:
“Team Richmond is doing so, so well in the London Youth Games and we are all thrilled with their latest achievement. Our Boccia Team is extremely talented and these are vital points in the bag towards us securing a top place finish in the overall Jubilee Rankings of the London Youth Games – well done!”
