Release Date: 12 June 2019
Richmond town centre will be awash with Tesla electric vehicles, street entertainment, and a smoothie bike to mark Clean Air Day on Thursday 20 June from 11am to 4pm.
Visitors to the Council’s stand outside Richmond station will also be able to get more information about air quality and have a go on a smoothie bike.
And whilst they’re there they can sign up to make Richmond upon Thames an idle-free borough. Vehicle engine idling is a major contributor to poor air quality in London with a minute of idling enough to fill 150 balloons with harmful emissions.
Schools taking part in Clean Air Day are encouraged to share their activities via the Council’s social media page by tagging @lbrut on Twitter using #CleanAirDay.
Cllr Alexander Ehmann, Chair of Richmond Council’s Transport and Air Quality Committee, said:
“Improving air quality is not just important in this borough it is now a global issue that requires everyone to play their part. According to the United Nations nine out of ten people breath polluted air. And whilst the rate in London is nowhere near that, we are nevertheless hugely affected by breathing in dirty, poisonous air.
“We are taking steps here to tackle the issue of air quality and there are so many ways you can help but the most important one is to shift into more environmentally friendly modes of transport. So please come along to Richmond station on the 20th to learn more and take a look at some of the environmentally friendly transport being demonstrated.”
Sign up to the Council’s anti-idling pledge.
