Young sporting champions represent the borough

Youngsters from across the borough once again represented Richmond in the London Youth Games Judo and Girls Handball competition this weekend.

Thirty competitors took to the mats at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in the Judo, with a host of medals won throughout the age categories. The boys rallied to jump one place in the standings to 4th and the girls secured a sterling 13th place.

Meanwhile the Girls Handball team were hoping to better last season’s silver medals at the Olympic Park’s Copper Box.

A tough start meant the team needed to win by six clear goals to progress to the afternoon quarter-finals and they duly obliged!  Winning 6-0 in their final round robin game. Victory in the quarters was followed by narrow defeat in the semi’s and the girls had to rally in the 3rd/4th place playoff that was to follow.

A great performance secured the 4-2 victory over Barking and Dagenham to seal bronze medals and a place on the podium for the second year running.

Cllr Meena Bond, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Sport, said:

“Yet again our young athletes have proudly represented our borough. Bettering last year’s performance. Congratulations to all those young competitors. As the end of the London Youth Games creeps ever closer, I am looking forward to seeing our final medal tally!”
