Top police officer and TV presenter to give advice on avoiding fraud and scams

Local residents are invited to a free information event, with Police Commissioner Cressida Dick and TV presenter Gloria Hunniford, to learn more about how you can avoid falling victim to fraudsters.

On 10 March, Richmond Police will be hosting an event at Twickenham Stadium. Officers and other crime prevention advisers will be giving advice on measures residents can take to avoid falling victims to dodgy doorstep salesman, cunning cold-callers or illegal internet scammers. Also presenting will be Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in London, Cressida Dick and TV presenter and radio broadcaster Gloria Hunniford.

Presentations will include:

  • Information regarding Operation Falcon (MET police Fraud)
  • What you need to know about courier scams and ATM security
  • How to guard against common frauds
  • How to protect yourself from cyber scams

Cllr Mark Boyle, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said:

"This is a great opportunity for people to learn more about how to stay safe when it comes to protecting themselves from unscrupulous fraudsters.

"This event will give residents an opportunity to hear from experts in telephone, property, online and banking fraud protection. All of which are on the rise.

“Attendees will be given advice on easy steps that they can take to deter opportunist thieves and lower the risk of falling victim to crime.”

PS Les Jackson, from Richmond Police, added:

“The aim of the Metropolitan Police Service is to protect society from becoming victims of crime. Our aim at Richmond is to work in partnership with local business to highlight the problems all residents face with that despicable crime, Scamming.

“The elderly, although not confined solely to the elderly, are being targeted. This event will bring experts from many fields to explain the dangers that face all.”
